ED 800 - Concepts of Educational Inquiry
Spring 2014
Unit 1
In Unit 1 we discussed John Dewey's work regarding the nature of a child and what education needs to provide for students so they can be successful learners. As we progressed through the unit we learned that several other renowned educators had differing views from Dewey and these views have also contributed to the current views of education. Students in this class were asked to write a paper sharing the two sides of the educational debate.

Unit 2
The topic of Unit 2 was Vivian Paley's style of inquiry. Vivian Paley was a kindergarten teacher for 30 years at Chicago University's Lab School. During this time she got in the habit of recording her story-times and then transcribing and reflection on the conversations of the day. When I wrote my paper I took the stance of, "What does Vivian Paley's work mean to secondary education?"

Unit 3
Unit 3 was discussing using Ethnographic Inquiry and Participant Observation through the means of the movie Whale Rider. Our writing prompt was to use scenes from the Maori people in New Zealand in order to discuss the education and culture of the Maori peoples. My paper was slightly off on its discussion I did not include as much detail as the assignment was asking for but I was able to find a balance in the details that I included.

Unit 4
In Unit 4, the discussion was focused around key pillars which influence education no matter when someone was learning. In order to this, we looked at several key American historical figures. I chose to write my paper on Abraham Lincoln and the influence that his friends and colleagues played on his education; not only his formal education but also his day to day informal education.

Unit 5
For Unit 5 we read Howard Gardner's book, Truth, Beauty, and Goodness Reframed: Educating for the Virtues in the Age of Truthiness and Twitter. Gardner discusses three key virtues (namely; truth, beauty, and goodness) and how he feels education for these virtues have gone by the wayside. Gardner encourages readers of the importance of educating for the virtues not just the educational subjects. Our writing prompt was to tell why Gardner felt so strongly about the importance of the virtues.

Unit 6
For this final unit there was a close inspection of the role of technology in education. The main source for this unit was the PBS special Digital Nation. Since one of my focuses for my graduate work is technology I really enjoyed this unit. For the writing assignment, I used Biographical Inquiry to look at how technology has influenced my personal learning experiences and also how it influences my role as an educator.
